Why do I need Travel Insurance that covers Climbing and Mountaineering?
It goes without saying that any type of climbing and mountaineering has more risk involved than sitting round the pool with a cocktail in hand.
That’s why our specialised travel insurance cover levels offer the extra protection climbers and mountaineers need to make sure their adventures are protected, compared to the cover on standard travel insurance policies.
What’s Included in Climbing and Mountaineering Travel Insurance?
As mentioned above, the policies DOGTAG offer cover for what you would expect from your standard travel insurance policy such as Cancellation and Emergency Medical expenses. We would always suggest that you make sure to purchase a policy that has the right level of cancellation cover for the trip you have paid for – especially as some of these can be expensive! But the added bonus with this type of policy is that you will also be covered for the specific type of Climbing or Mountaineering you’ll be doing when you select the Mountaineering extension.
To ensure that all your climbing and mountaineering gear are fully protected, we highly recommend adding the Mountaineering extension to your policy, subject to the appropriate additional premium.
This extension offers extensive cover for both Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance policies, with some differences in benefit limits:
- Delayed equipment: Up to £1,000 for Single Trip, and up to £200 for Annual Multi-Trip, with no excess.
- Lost, stolen, or damaged equipment: Cover up to £2,000 on both Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip policies, with a £75 excess and a £600 single article limit.
- Trip disruption due to bad weather: Cover for both Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip policies, with a £75 excess.
For further information please visit our policy wordings page here.
With this added protection, you can focus on your adventure knowing that your equipment is insured against loss, theft, or damage. Make sure to include this option when selecting your policy to give you extra peace of mind on your next climb.
Of course, as we’d all expect, there are some requirements, such as using the correct equipment like ropes and belays. Climbing without such safety equipment (e.g., free climbing or free mountaineering) is an Excluded activity and we do not offer cover for this. Likewise, Solo mountaineering, in other words, climbing on your own is excluded.
Can I get cover for my group under Climbing and Mountaineering Travel Insurance?
Now we’re aware that a lot of the time it’s likely you’re going on trips and adventures with a friend or with multiple friends in a group. We know that, and we’d do the same, so DOGTAG policies enable you to have group policies where you can all be covered under one policy, which also results in the same level of cover all under one policy. It’s as simple as doing up your Salomon Quicklaces!
Which is the most suitable travel insurance cover for the Climbing and Mountaineering you’ll be doing?
Now the all-important part of knowing what level of cover you need, and it’s the same general basis. As the higher you climb, the harder it gets. So, the higher you climb, the higher the risk involved, and in the same vein, the higher you climb, the higher level of insurance cover you’ll need.
Here is a simple guide to the cover you need based on your climbing or mountaineering trip and altitude:
- Climbing wall only = Sport Pack
- Climbing or Mountaineering up to 2,000m = Sport+ Pack
- Climbing or Mountaineering up to 3,000m = Extreme Pack
- Climbing or Mountaineering up to 4,000m = Extreme+ Pack
- Climbing or Mountaineering up to 6,000m = Super Extreme Pack
- Climbing or Mountaineering over 6,000m – (Click here to discuss this activity further)
And for those daring and brave enough to attempt Kilimanjaro, Everest, and other top-level peaks, we take our hats off to you because there is also specific cover under the Super Extreme Pack.
